My Grandmother Used to Say

Never let weeds grow 
in your garden.
I know what she meant.
Before purslane spreads
between rows of pink 
cosmos, pick it, 
because loamy charcoal
dirt makes rosy flower
heads even prettier.
Watch out — pineapple weed
and creeping charlie will
